Deadbolts for Australian Homes & Businesses

Shop our range of deadbolts from Australia's most trusted brands including Lockwood, Gainsborough, Whitco, Yale and Carbine. All deadbolts in our range comply with Australian Standard AS4145.2 — the independent benchmark for lock security, durability and corrosion resistance that most home insurance policies require.

Whether you need a single cylinder deadbolt with thumb-turn for everyday use, a double cylinder deadbolt for doors with adjacent glass, or a restricted key deadbolt to prevent unauthorised key duplication, we have the right option for your door and security requirements.

Free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $100. Pick up available from our four Melbourne stores in Frankston, Mornington, Rosebud and Braeside. As qualified locksmiths, we also offer local installation and keyed alike services — one key for all your locks.

Single Cylinder vs Double Cylinder Deadbolts

A single cylinder deadbolt uses a key on the outside and a thumb-turn on the inside. This is the most common choice for residential front and back doors — convenient to use and fast to unlock from inside in an emergency.

A double cylinder deadbolt requires a key on both sides. This is strongly recommended when there is glass in or adjacent to the door — it prevents a burglar breaking the glass and reaching in to turn the thumb-turn. Keep a key accessible inside if you use a double cylinder deadbolt.

What to Look for in a Deadbolt

  • AS4145.2 compliance — required by most Australian insurers and the benchmark for security performance
  • Minimum 20mm throw bolt — the bolt must extend at least 20mm into the door frame to resist kick-in attacks
  • Anti-drill and anti-pick protection — hardened steel inserts and security pins resist common attack methods
  • Correct backset — measure 60mm or 70mm from door edge to hole centre before ordering
  • Weather-appropriate finish — satin stainless steel or brushed nickel for coastal and high-humidity environments

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a deadbolt and a deadlock?
Deadlock is the Australian term for a deadbolt — they are the same thing. Both refer to a solid bolt that extends into the door frame when locked and cannot be pushed back without a key or thumb-turn.

Do I need a deadbolt for home insurance?
Most Australian home and contents insurance policies require a deadlock or deadlatch on all external doors as a minimum condition of cover. Without a compliant lock, a break-in claim may be reduced or denied. Locks complying with AS4145.2 meet most insurers' requirements — check your policy to confirm.

What backset do I need?
The two standard backsets in Australia are 60mm and 70mm. Measure from the edge of your door to the centre of the existing lock hole. Most deadbolts in our range are available in both sizes. Email us a photo if you are unsure.

Can a deadbolt be picked?
Quality AS4145.2-compliant deadbolts with security pins are significantly more pick-resistant than basic locks. However, the more common real-world attack is forcing the door frame, not picking the cylinder. A strong strike plate fixed with 75mm screws into the structural frame is as important as the lock itself.

Is a deadbolt enough on its own?
A deadbolt is an excellent security layer, but most locksmiths recommend combining it with a deadlatch as the primary everyday lock. The deadlatch secures the door automatically on close — the deadbolt adds a second, stronger bolt for overnight or when leaving the property.
