Entrance Sets Australia — Front Door Hardware That Works as Hard as It Looks

The entrance set is the most important hardware decision in the entire home. It is the first thing guests touch, the last thing you check before bed, and the primary security barrier between your family and the outside world. Get it right and you have a front door that is secure, smooth to operate, easy to key alongside the rest of the property, and one that makes a genuine design statement. Get it wrong and you have a lock that jams, a handle that wobbles, a cylinder that gets picked, or a set that looks like it was chosen in five minutes from the wrong shelf.

As a licensed locksmith business, we do not just sell entrance sets — we specify and install them every day. Our range covers every application from a standard residential front door replacement to a premium architectural entrance, from Gainsborough Trilock for maximum security convenience to Tradco and Nidus long plate sets for period and design-led homes. Free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $100. Not sure what suits your door? Contact our locksmith team before you order.

What Is an Entrance Set?

An entrance set is a complete front door hardware package that includes both the handle (lever, knob or pull) and the locking mechanism, designed to work together as a matched, functional unit. Unlike an internal passage or privacy set (which only latches without a key lock), an entrance set provides keyed security — only someone with the correct key can enter from the outside when the door is locked.

In Australian residential hardware, entrance sets come in several configurations:

  • Lever entrance set — a lever handle on a backplate or rose, incorporating a keyed cylinder on the exterior. Standard for most residential front doors. Available with either a deadlatch (spring-loaded, locks automatically) or a deadbolt (manually thrown with a key) function.
  • Trilock entrance set — Gainsborough's 3-in-1 system combining passage latch, privacy snib and keyed deadbolt in a single lock body. Australia's most installed front door lock system.
  • Pull handle entrance set — an exterior pull handle (no lever, no operating function) paired with a separate mortice lock or deadbolt in the door. For doors where the visual statement of a substantial pull handle is the design priority.
  • Long plate lever entrance set — a lever handle on a long rectangular backplate, housing the cylinder and lever in one elegant piece. The standard for period and design-led homes — Tradco, Nidus OZI-1 and Iver entrance kits all use this configuration.
  • Mortice entrance set — a heavy-duty lock body morticed (recessed) into the door edge, with matching lever furniture. Provides the highest level of mechanical security. Standard for commercial and high-security residential applications.

Single Cylinder vs Double Cylinder — Which Is Right for Your Door?

This is the most important decision in selecting an entrance set and the one that causes the most confusion. Here is the definitive answer:

Single cylinder — key on the outside, thumb-turn on the inside. The most common configuration for Australian residential front doors. Easy to exit in an emergency (just turn the thumb-turn), no key required to lock up from inside. The right choice for most standard front and back doors.

Double cylinder — key required on both sides to lock and unlock. Used where the door is adjacent to a glass sidelight or glazed panel — an intruder who breaks the glass could reach through and turn a thumb-turn to open the door. A double cylinder prevents this, because a key is required on both sides. The trade-off: you need a key to exit from inside in an emergency — important consideration for fire egress. Double cylinder is also the standard for Gainsborough Trilock sets, where the deadbolt is operated by key and the snib function handles daytime privacy.

Locksmith's advice: If your front door has no glass adjacent to the lock, single cylinder is almost always the better choice for everyday convenience and emergency egress. If your door is flanked by glass sidelights where the glass comes within arm's reach of the lock, double cylinder is the appropriate security specification. As a licensed locksmith, we recommend against over-specifying double cylinder in situations where single cylinder is adequate — the egress trade-off is real and matters in an emergency.

Entrance Sets by Brand — Our Full Range

Gainsborough Trilock — Australia's Most Installed Front Door

The Gainsborough Trilock is the entrance set we install on more front doors than any other. The Trilock 3-in-1 function combines passage mode (door opens freely), privacy/snib mode (locked from outside, free to exit from inside) and deadlock mode (full key-operated deadbolt, 20mm throw) in a single lock body that fits the standard Australian 54mm door preparation. Available in Traditional, Contemporary, Eclipse, Urban, Aurora, Harper and Cove profiles across Satin Chrome, Matt Black, Satin Brass and selected other finishes. Can be keyed alike to other Gainsborough products via the Euro profile cylinder. The Freestyle Electronic Trilock is the smart lock version.

Lockwood — High Security Entrance Sets

Lockwood entrance sets combine Australia's most trusted security brand with proven engineering. The Lockwood 001 Deadlatch is the most widely installed automatic deadlatch in the country — it self-deadlatches when the door closes and includes LockAlert status indicator, SafetyRelease and Kinetic Defence bump/pick resistance. For complete front door packages, Lockwood deadlatches pair with Lockwood lever furniture, or the Lockwood 001 can be combined with a separate deadbolt for maximum security. All Lockwood products use the C4 keyway, compatible with Australia's most widely supported keying and master key systems.

Tradco — Period & Heritage Entrance Sets

For Victorian, Federation, Edwardian, Californian Bungalow and Hamptons homes, Tradco entrance sets deliver period-accurate hardware with a matching whole-of-home system behind them. Tradco long plate lever sets are available with Euro cylinder entrance function (key outside, thumb-turn inside) or Traditional Keyhole function (skeleton key and rim lock — for authentic period restorations). Every Tradco entrance set is available in the full Tradco finish range — polished brass, antique brass, antique copper, satin chrome, matte black and more — and can be matched to Tradco hinges, window fittings, light switches and cabinet hardware throughout the home.

Iver — Entrance Kits for Contemporary & Hamptons Homes

Iver entrance kits include two levers on escutcheon plates, a 60mm backset Euro 85 lock body and a 70mm Euro cylinder (key/turn or key/key), plus all fixings — everything needed in one box. Available in the full Iver finish range including Brushed Gold PVD (lifetime corrosion warranty), Satin Nickel, Brushed Brass, Matte Black and more. Iver levers are fire-rated to AS1530.4:2014 and rated D8 (500,000 cycles) under AS4145.2:2008. The entrance kit Euro cylinder is standard 70mm profile and can be rekeyed to suit a keyed-alike or master key system by a locksmith.

Nidus OZI-1 — Designer Entrance for Custom Homes

The Nidus OZI-1 is the entrance solution for homes where the Mediterranean design aesthetic of the Nidus range is specified throughout. An Australian-made mortice lock body paired with Nidus Domici, Domici Knurled, Marino, Metro or Rialto long plate levers, the OZI-1 provides passage latch, internal snib bolt and double cylinder Euro deadbolt functions in one integrated set. Available in Satin Brass, Gunmetal Grey, Matte Black, Satin Chrome and Polished Chrome — matching the internal lever range throughout the home.

N2Lok & Other Entrance Lock Systems

For commercial and high-security residential entrance applications requiring mortice lock solutions, N2Lok and other commercial-grade entrance lock systems provide the higher security specifications required in multi-unit residential, commercial and institutional buildings. Contact our locksmith team for commercial entrance set specification and supply.

Entrance Set Selection Guide — What to Measure & Check Before Ordering

The most common entrance set ordering mistake is not measuring before purchasing. Here is what you need to know:

Backset — the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the existing handle hole. Standard Australian residential backset is 60mm. Measure this before ordering — most entrance sets are designed for 60mm backset. If your door has a non-standard backset, contact our team before ordering.

Bore hole (crossbore) — the diameter of the large hole through the door face. Standard Australian residential bore is 54mm. Most entrance sets suit 54mm bore. Tradco and Nidus rose sets suit 54mm. Gainsborough Trilock suits 54mm standard bore.

Door thickness — standard Australian residential doors are 35–45mm thick. Most entrance sets suit this range. For thick doors (over 45mm), longer spindles or extension kits may be required. Contact our team if your door is outside this range.

Door swing & handing — whether your door swings left or right, and opens inward or outward. Most Australian lever entrance sets are non-handed (reversible). Deadlatches like the Lockwood 001 are designed for inward-opening timber frame doors — if your door opens outward, a different product is required.

Door frame material — timber, aluminium or steel. Lockwood 001 and standard deadlatches suit timber frame doors. Aluminium doors require specific short-backset mortice lock solutions (Lockwood 3782/5782 series). If you have an aluminium door, contact our locksmith team before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions — Entrance Sets

What is an entrance set?
An entrance set is a complete front door hardware package combining a handle (lever, knob or pull) and a keyed locking mechanism. It provides both the operating function (opening and closing the door) and the security function (keyed lock that prevents unauthorised entry). In Australian residential hardware, entrance sets typically include a lever or handle, a lock body (deadlatch, Trilock, mortice or deadbolt), a Euro cylinder, a strike plate and all fixings.

What is the difference between a Trilock and a standard entrance set?
A standard entrance set uses a separate deadbolt and latch — two distinct mechanisms in the door. A Gainsborough Trilock combines three functions in a single lock body: passage mode (door opens freely), privacy/snib mode (locked from outside, free inside) and deadlock mode (key-operated deadbolt). The advantage is simplicity — one operation for all three modes, one hole in the door, and a streamlined appearance. Trilocks secure more Australian front doors than any other system.

Should I choose single or double cylinder for my front door?
Single cylinder (key outside, thumb-turn inside) is appropriate for most standard residential front doors where no glass is adjacent to the lock. Double cylinder (key both sides) is appropriate where a glass sidelight or glazed panel is within arm's reach of the lock, as it prevents an intruder breaking the glass and reaching through to operate an interior thumb-turn. Double cylinder requires a key to exit from inside — consider fire egress implications before specifying. Our locksmith team can advise for your specific door configuration.

Can my entrance set be keyed alike to my other door locks?
Yes. Most entrance sets in our range use Euro profile cylinders that can be rekeyed to match other locks on your property — one key for front door, back door, garage access and deadbolts. This is one of the most popular services our locksmith team provides when supplying entrance sets. Contact us when ordering to discuss keyed-alike requirements and pricing.

What entrance set suits a Victorian or Federation home?
For Victorian and Federation homes, Tradco long plate lever entrance sets with Euro cylinder or Traditional Keyhole function are the most historically appropriate specification. In polished brass, antique brass or satin brass — matching the window fittings, hinges and light switches throughout the home. For a more contemporary interpretation of a period home, Tradco antique brass with a euro cylinder entrance function delivers period aesthetics with modern security. Our team can specify the correct Tradco entrance set for your home's era.

What entrance set suits a Hamptons or contemporary home?
For Hamptons homes, Iver entrance kits (Brushed Gold PVD or Satin Nickel) or Gainsborough Trilock Urban or Aurora (Satin Brass or Matte Black) are the strongest choices. For design-led contemporary homes, the Nidus OZI-1 with Domici Knurled in Satin Brass, Gunmetal Grey or Matte Black is our most-requested premium entrance set specification. Contact our team to discuss the complete specification for your home.

Can I install an entrance set myself?
Many Australian entrance sets are designed for straightforward installation — particularly Gainsborough Trilock (which replaces an existing Trilock without door modification), and Iver and Tradco sets on standard Australian door preparations. If you are replacing an existing entrance set on a door that already has the correct bore hole and backset, DIY installation is feasible. If you are installing on a new door, or your existing door requires modification, professional installation by a licensed locksmith is recommended to ensure correct operation and security. Our team provides installation across Melbourne's south-east and the Mornington Peninsula.

What entrance set suits an aluminium door?
Aluminium doors (common in Australian units and commercial buildings) require specific short-backset mortice lock solutions rather than standard residential entrance sets. The Lockwood 3782/5782 series Selector mortice lock is the most widely specified solution for aluminium hinged doors. Contact our locksmith team — aluminium door entrance specification is more complex than timber, and the wrong product will not fit or function correctly.

How do I know if my entrance set needs replacing?
Signs that your entrance set needs attention: the key is stiff or difficult to turn; the lever is loose or worn; the latch does not engage cleanly; the door does not latch without force; the cylinder shows signs of wear or has been compromised; or the set is more than 10–15 years old and showing general wear. As a locksmith business, we also recommend rekeying or replacing entrance cylinders whenever you move into a new property — you have no way of knowing how many key copies exist from previous occupants.
