Iver Door Handle Kits Explained: Passage vs Privacy vs Entrance

If you've landed on the Iver range and found yourself staring at the words "passage kit", "privacy kit", and "entrance kit" wondering what the difference actually is — you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions our locksmiths field, and getting it wrong is an expensive mistake.

This guide explains each kit type in plain English, tells you which doors in your home need which, and shows you exactly what's included in each Iver kit so you can order with confidence.

What Is an Iver Door Handle Kit?

An Iver door handle kit is a complete, all-in-one package that includes everything you need to fully fit a door handle — not just the lever itself, but also the latch mechanism, faceplate, striker plate, spindles, and all fixings. You open one box, and everything you need is inside.

This is different from buying a lever handle on its own, which requires you to source the latch and other components separately. For anyone fitting multiple doors — a renovation, a new build, or even just a few rooms — kits are the faster, smarter way to buy.

Iver offers three kit types: passage, privacy, and entrance. The difference comes down to one thing: the locking function.

Passage Kits — For Doors That Don't Need to Lock

A passage kit contains a lever handle and a tube latch. The latch holds the door closed when you push it shut, but there is no locking mechanism. The door can be opened from either side at any time.

Use a passage kit for:

  • Hallway doors
  • Linen cupboards
  • Bedroom doors
  • Walk-in wardrobes
  • Laundry doors
  • Any internal door where privacy or security isn't needed

What's included in an Iver Passage Kit:

  • Lever handle pair (interior and exterior)
  • Tube latch (60mm backset standard)
  • Faceplate and striker plate
  • Spindle and fixings
  • Drill template

The most common mistake: People sometimes put a passage kit on a bedroom or bathroom door thinking they'll be fine without a lock — and then immediately regret it when they have guests over. If there's any chance you'll want to lock the door, go privacy instead.

Privacy Kits — For Bathrooms, Bedrooms, and Ensuites

A privacy kit includes a lever handle with a thumb turn or button lock on the inside, and an emergency release on the outside. You can lock the door from inside with a simple turn or push of a button, and it can be unlocked from outside with a coin or flat tool in an emergency.

Use a privacy kit for:

  • Bathrooms
  • Ensuites
  • Bedrooms
  • Home offices (if you want the option to lock)
  • Powder rooms

What's included in an Iver Privacy Kit:

  • Lever handle pair (interior lever with thumb turn, exterior lever with emergency release)
  • Privacy latch (60mm backset standard) or mortice Lock
  • Privacy bolt
  • Faceplate and striker plate
  • Spindle and fixings
  • Drill template

The key detail: The privacy lock is not a security lock. It's designed for personal privacy — to stop someone accidentally walking in — not to secure a room against forced entry. For that, you need an entrance kit.

Pro tip from our locksmiths: Always fit privacy kits to bathroom and ensuite doors. Even if you don't think you'll use the lock, the resale and rental value of a home with properly specified door hardware is noticeably higher.

Entrance Kits — For Front Doors and Secure Rooms

An entrance kit is a full security solution. It includes a lever handle paired with a keyed cylinder lock, meaning the door can be locked and unlocked with a key from the outside and a thumb turn from the inside. Some variations also include a deadbolt.

Use an entrance kit for:

  • Front entry doors
  • Back doors leading outside
  • Internal doors that need true security (e.g. a home office, server room, or medication storage)
  • Granny flat doors

What's included in an Iver Entrance Kit:

  • Lever handle pair
  • Mortice or tubular lock mechanism
  • Euro cylinder (keyed)
  • Thumb turn (interior) - If chosen single cylinder option
  • Faceplate, striker plate, and all fixings
  • Drill template

Important: Entrance kits come in several configurations — key/thumb turn (most common for front doors), key/key (for doors accessible from both sides externally), and key/snib. If you're not sure which configuration suits your door, email us a photo and our team will advise.

What About Backsets?

One more thing to get right before ordering: your backset. The backset is the distance from the edge of the door to the centre of the hole where the latch sits. Australian doors use one of two standard measurements:

  • 60mm backset — the most common in Australian residential homes
  • 70mm backset — used in some commercial doors and older properties

If you're replacing an existing handle, the easiest way to check is to remove the existing latch and measure from the door edge to the centre of the bolt. All Iver kits specify which backset they suit — if you're unsure, email us at sales@lockmart.com.au and we'll confirm for you.
