Digital Locks for Australian Homes, Businesses & Rental Properties

Digital locks are one of the most practical security upgrades available for Australian homes, rental properties and businesses. No more lost keys, no more unauthorised copies, no more key handovers at midnight — just a code, a fingerprint, a card or your phone. We stock Australia's most trusted digital lock brands including Yale, McGrath, Gainsborough, Schlage, Carbine and Borg, across every access method and application from a simple keypad deadbolt to a fully connected smart lock with app control, Airbnb integration and voice assistant compatibility.

As a licensed locksmith business with over 55 years of combined experience, we don't just sell digital locks — we install, program, service and repair them. When you buy from us, you're buying from a team that installs these products on doors every day and knows which models work reliably in the real world on Australian door frames and in Australian conditions. Free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $100. In-store pickup and local installation available across four locations on Melbourne's south-east and Mornington Peninsula. Contact our team for advice before you order.

Digital Lock vs Smart Lock — What's the Difference?

The terms get used interchangeably but they mean different things, and getting it right matters for choosing the correct product for your situation.

A digital lock provides keyless access via PIN code, fingerprint, RFID card or a combination of these — but operates completely independently. No internet connection, no app, no WiFi required. It runs on batteries, works anywhere, and functions whether or not your network is up. Digital locks are the right choice for offices, storerooms, internal doors, gates, sheds and any application where keyless entry is needed without app dependency or remote management.

A smart lock does everything a digital lock does, and adds wireless connectivity — Bluetooth, WiFi, or both — so you can lock and unlock remotely from your phone, create and revoke access codes without being on-site, receive notifications, view access logs, and integrate with smart home platforms (Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa) or booking platforms (Airbnb). Smart locks are ideal for front doors, Airbnb and short-stay rental properties, investment properties managed remotely, and anyone who wants real-time visibility and control over access.

Still unsure? Our locksmith team can recommend the right product for your specific door, application and budget.

The Brands We Stock — What Each Does Best

Yale — Smart Home Integration & Airbnb-Ready

Yale is one of the world's most recognised lock brands and their digital lock range has evolved into one of the strongest smart home hardware lines available in Australia. The Yale Assure series is the benchmark for keyless deadbolts — slim profile, keypad or touchscreen, built-in WiFi on the latest models (no separate bridge required), and native integration with Airbnb, Apple Home, Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Yale's direct Airbnb integration means booking calendars can automatically create and expire guest codes — a game-changer for hosts managing multiple properties. Multiple finishes available including Satin Nickel, Matte Black and Polished Brass. Backed by strong warranty coverage. Yale is the most widely specified digital lock for Australian residential front doors and short-stay rental properties. See also: Smart Digital Locks for the full Yale WiFi range.

McGrath — Premium Build, Biometric & Commercial Grade

McGrath is the choice of Australian locksmiths, property managers and commercial operators who need a digital lock built to a higher specification than residential brands. The McGrath NX5 offers fingerprint biometric, RFID card, PIN code and Bluetooth app access in one unit — with robust metal construction, high-security cylinder override, and a level of build quality that holds up in high-traffic commercial and residential applications. The McGrath NX3 covers the same access methods at a slightly more compact specification. McGrath locks are widely used in medium-density residential, strata buildings, offices and Airbnb properties where reliability under daily use is non-negotiable. Gainsborough Freestyle Trilock — Designer Smart Lock

The Gainsborough Freestyle Electronic Trilock is Australia's most design-led smart lock — the only keyless entry system that combines a full premium lever aesthetic with Gainsborough's proven Trilock 3-in-1 security platform. From the outside it looks like a high-end architectural lever handle; the backlit keypad is concealed behind a stylish slide cover. Built-in WiFi (no hub required), compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings via Matter over Thread. Manages up to 20 user codes via app. Battery operated (4× AA, up to 12 months) with 9V emergency external power. Available in Matt Black and Brushed Satin Chrome. 5-year tarnish, 10-year mechanical and 2-year electronic warranty. For homes where security and aesthetics both matter — this is the specification. View the full Gainsborough range.

Schlage — High Security, Grade 1 Rated

Schlage (part of Allegion, the same group as Gainsborough and Briton) is the choice for applications where security specification is the priority above all else. The Schlage Encode series carries an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 rating — the highest residential security grade available, surpassing most competitors who achieve only Grade 2. Built-in WiFi, up to 100 unique access codes, auto-lock, Alexa and Google Home compatible, and a limited lifetime mechanical warranty. For front doors in high-crime areas, managed rental properties where guest security is a liability consideration, or any application where maximum physical resistance to forced entry is required — Schlage is the strongest specification in the digital lock category. The Encode lever version suits doors where an all-in-one entrance set (handle and lock combined) is preferred.

Carbine — Versatile 3-in-1 Digital Deadbolt

Carbine (part of the Davcor group, the same Australian family as Nidus hardware) produces the CEL2 series — a 3-in-1 digital lock available in deadbolt, lever set and mortice versions. The CEL2 is widely used across residential and light commercial applications for its versatility across door types, its competitive price point and its compatibility with Australian door preparations. PIN code, RFID card and key override. Carbine is the practical choice for rental property owners who want reliable keyless entry across multiple doors without the premium cost of the major international brands. See also: Nidus door handles from the same Davcor group — pairs perfectly for a whole-of-home hardware approach.

Borg — Mechanical Code Locks (No Battery Required)

Borg mechanical code locks are the one digital lock in the range that needs no battery, no power and no electronics whatsoever. A push-button code operates a purely mechanical mechanism — nothing to go flat, nothing to hack, nothing to update. Borg's ECP (Easi-Code Pro) system allows the access code to be changed directly on the door without any tools. The marine-grade Pro series uses 316 stainless steel internal components for coastal, outdoor and high-humidity environments. Ideal for offices, gates, sheds, storerooms, plant rooms, schools and any application where simple, permanent keyless access without battery maintenance is the requirement. Choosing the Right Digital Lock — What to Check Before You Order

Door type and hole size — this is the most important check and the most common source of ordering mistakes in Australia. Standard residential timber doors use a 54mm bore hole with a 60mm backset. Aluminium doors have narrow stiles that standard locks often do not fit — if you have an aluminium door, contact our team before ordering and provide a photo. Sliding doors require specific lock types entirely — see our sliding door lock range.

Access methods — decide whether you need PIN only, fingerprint, RFID, Bluetooth, WiFi or a combination. More access methods adds versatility but also complexity in setup and more components that could potentially fail. For most residential applications, PIN plus key override is sufficient. For Airbnb and rental management, WiFi with app control is genuinely valuable. For commercial applications with multiple staff, fingerprint or RFID avoids shared codes entirely.

Connectivity requirements — Bluetooth-only locks require you to be in physical proximity to use the app. WiFi locks can be controlled from anywhere in the world. If remote management matters to you, specify a WiFi model. Check whether a separate bridge or hub is required (some older models need one) — modern WiFi locks like Yale Assure 2, Schlage Encode and Gainsborough Freestyle have built-in WiFi requiring no additional hardware.

Battery life and backup power — most quality digital locks last 8–12 months on standard AA batteries. Look for a low-battery warning function (most good models give you weeks of warning). Check whether the lock supports a 9V battery jump-start on the exterior terminals — this is an emergency measure if you arrive home to a completely flat battery. Always keep the mechanical key override accessible.

Weather resistance for external doors — not all digital locks are rated for fully exposed outdoor conditions. For coastal properties, external gates or any location with direct rain or salt air exposure, check the IP rating. IP54 is the minimum for a sheltered external application; IP65 or higher for fully exposed outdoor use. McGrath and Schlage both offer strong weather resistance. For gates and fully exposed outdoor applications, Borg marine-grade mechanical locks are often the most reliable long-term choice.

Security rating — look for AS4145.2 compliance for Australian standards, or ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 for the highest security specification. Schlage Encode carries Grade 1. Most quality residential digital locks achieve Grade 2, which is appropriate for standard residential front door applications.

Digital Locks for Airbnb & Short-Stay Rentals — The Full Picture

Digital locks are one of the highest-ROI upgrades an Airbnb host or short-stay rental operator can make. The operational benefit is immediate: no key handovers, no lockouts from lost keys, no lock changes between guests. But the full picture is more compelling than that:

Guest experience and ratings — Airbnb data consistently shows listings with self-check-in achieve higher check-in ratings. One study tracking Yale Assure users found communication ratings improve from 4.7 to 4.95 stars after installation — driven entirely by seamless arrival experience. Self-check-in also enables late-night and early-morning arrivals without any host involvement.

Security between stays — every guest gets a unique code that expires at checkout. No key copies in circulation, no risk that a previous guest retained access. Change codes between every booking in seconds from your phone, without a locksmith.

Operational efficiency for multiple properties — hosts managing multiple Airbnb listings can issue, revoke and manage all codes from a single app. Cleaners get a recurring code for their scheduled day; maintenance staff get a one-time code for a specific visit; guests get a time-limited code that auto-expires. The McGrath NX5 and Yale Assure 2 with Airbnb integration are the most widely deployed in the Australian short-stay market for exactly this reason.

The Mornington Peninsula short-stay market — the lower peninsula (Rosebud, Rye, Blairgowrie, Sorrento, Dromana, McCrae, Tootgarook, Portsea) and the mid-peninsula (Mornington, Mount Martha, Mount Eliza, Safety Beach) represent one of the most concentrated short-stay rental markets in Victoria. Our four stores serve this entire corridor — if you're an Airbnb host or property manager on the peninsula, we can supply and install digital locks on-site and program them for your management workflow. Frequently Asked Questions — Digital Locks

Are digital locks secure?
Yes — quality digital locks eliminate the risks associated with physical keys: no key duplication, instant code revocation if access is compromised, and full audit trails of who accessed the door and when. Choose a brand with a strong mechanical base and Australian Standards compliance (AS4145.2) or ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 for maximum assurance. All digital locks we stock include a mechanical key override as a backup. For additional security, a digital lock can be paired with a separate deadbolt for two-point external door protection.

What happens if the battery dies?
All digital locks we stock provide low battery warnings well in advance — typically weeks before the battery is fully depleted. Most support a 9V battery jump-start on the exterior terminals as an emergency measure if the battery does run completely flat. Every lock also includes a mechanical key override. Keep the backup key in a key safe mounted near the door — the combination of a digital lock and a wall-mounted key safe is the most secure and convenient access solution for Airbnb and rental properties.

Can digital locks be installed on aluminium doors?
Yes, but compatibility depends entirely on your specific aluminium door profile. Aluminium doors often have narrow stiles that standard residential digital locks are not designed for — the lock body physically does not fit. Email us a photo of your door at sales@lockmart.com.au and we will confirm compatibility and recommend the correct model before you order. This is the single most common cause of digital lock returns in Australia.

Are digital locks good for Airbnb?
Yes — they are one of the highest-value upgrades a short-stay host can make. Smart locks (WiFi-connected) are the most powerful option for Airbnb because guest codes can be automatically created and expired in sync with booking dates. Yale Assure 2 (with native Airbnb integration) and McGrath NX5 are the two most widely deployed in the Australian short-stay market. A digital lock paired with a key safe for backup access is the complete solution for most Airbnb properties.

Can I install a digital lock myself?
Most digital locks are designed for DIY installation if your door already has the standard Australian 54mm bore hole at 60mm backset. The installation process is typically straightforward: remove the existing handle and deadbolt, install the new lock following the template, connect the interior and exterior components, set your initial code. For new holes, aluminium doors, fire-rated doors or any door where the existing preparation does not match the lock specification — professional installation is strongly recommended. We offer on-site installation and programming across Melbourne's south-east and the Mornington Peninsula.

What is the difference between Bluetooth and WiFi in a smart lock?
A Bluetooth smart lock communicates directly between your phone and the lock — you must be within Bluetooth range (typically 10–15 metres) to use app features. You cannot lock or unlock remotely when you're away from home. A WiFi smart lock connects to your home network and can be controlled from anywhere in the world via the internet. For Airbnb hosts and remote property managers, WiFi is the essential specification. For homeowners who only want app convenience when they're nearby, Bluetooth is lower power and often cheaper. Modern locks like Yale Assure 2, Schlage Encode and Gainsborough Freestyle have built-in WiFi — no separate bridge required.

Can I key a digital lock to match my other door locks?
Most digital locks include a Euro profile key override cylinder that can be rekeyed by a locksmith to match other cylinders on your property — front door, back door and deadbolts all on one key. Our locksmith team can arrange keyed-alike supply when you order a digital lock. Contact us to discuss keying requirements before ordering.

What digital lock suits a heritage or period home?
For Victorian, Federation, Edwardian or Hamptons homes where the front door hardware aesthetic matters, the Gainsborough Freestyle Trilock is the only digital lock in the market that looks like a premium architectural lever from the outside. All the technology is concealed. For internal doors in period homes, a standard Tradco or Iver lever set is far more appropriate than a digital lock — digital locks are primarily a front and back door product. See our restoration door handle range for period-appropriate internal hardware.

Are digital locks suitable for fire doors?
Selected digital locks are tested and certified for fire door applications. If you need to install a digital or smart lock on a certified fire door, the lock must be type-tested and approved as part of the fire door assembly — a standard residential digital lock is not acceptable. Contact our locksmith team before ordering if fire door compliance is required. See also: our door closers range for AS1905.1 compliant fire door hardware.
